Taggerung

The Taggerung is the fourteenth book in the Redwall series of books by Brian Jacques. It was released in 2001.

The Taggerung is the story of a young otter named Deyna. He is stolen, as a baby, from his home at Redwall Abbey and taken to a tribe of fierce warriors. He is supposed to be their “chosen” warrior, that they call the Taggerung. The Taggerung is the strongest of the clan, and is supposed to be a ruthless killer; however, Deyna refuses to kill and decides instead to run away and try to return to his home. A home that he has never even seen. He is pursued by people from the tribe who are attempting to kill him. Along his journey Deyna finds a new friend. A mouse that has a strange background of his own, Nimbalo the Slayer. Together they travel and meet different characters and villains. During the night Deyna, known as tag, dreams of his birthplace. Yet he doesn’t know where they came from or why. A warrior mouse enters his dreams and says only one thing, “Deyna.” Tagg and his friend Nimbalo search and ask others about this mystical place and evasive warrior mouse. Until they happen to come along a family of hedgehogs who are willing to take him there on their raft. They ride the waters on their way to Tagg’s true home. Along the way they find their pursuers, who kidnap Nimbalo. At the same time Tagg is captured by his home, Redwall! Eventually they let Tagg go to aide his friend and slay the villains who kidnapped him. In the fight Tagg is wounded by an arrow that protrudes through his chest. He is taken to the otter-renowned otter-fixer. She says it will take months to fix. Will she be able to do it? Will Tagg live? In the story, the word 'Taggerung' literally means a warrior of unbeatable strength and courage.
