La Plante was born in 1940 in Liverpool, England. She grew up in a family of five children and was educated at Santa Marta Catholic Primary School and Liverpool University. Her parents, Bill and Mollie, both had a keen interest in literature and encouraged Lynda to express her creativity. After studying acting in Liverpool, she moved to London to pursue her career. There she worked in a variety of jobs, from being a stewardess on a cruise ship to being a model. During this period, La Plante's interest in writing began to emerge. She took various jobs to supplement her freelance writing, such as working at a theater and library assistant.

Deciding to pursue a more substantial career in television writing, La Plante went on to write and produce several successful television series. Her career began with BBC police drama Widows. This was followed by her successful TV series, Prime Suspect. Originally, only three series were planned, but after the success of the first series, the show was stretched to seven installments. The series was nominated for four Emmy Awards and won several BAFTA awards.

In 2008, La Plante launched a global acting agency, Lyon La Plante Creative Ltd. She has since produced and written several other television projects and feature films. La Plante continues to be active in supporting the arts, charity, and education. She serves on the boards of Action for Kids and Women in Film & Television.

She has also won many awards during her career, such as an International Emmy Award for Best Writing and two Writers' Guild of Great Britain Awards for Best Dramatic Writing.

Today, La Plante remains a respected and influential figure in the entertainment industry. She is the vice-president of the International Women's Forum, and she has received a CBE honor from Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. La Plante's immense body of work is a testament to her hard work and pioneering spirit. She not only broke several gender stereotypes in the industry, but also proved the importance of pursuing your dreams and believing in yourself.

Throughout her career, La Plante has proudly demonstrated the benefits of creativity and ambition in achieving success. Both her literary and televisual works have become part of British culture and will continue to be celebrated for many years to come.
